In August 2019 Iowa became the eleventh state in the US to legalize sports betting. Some were surprised that this rather conservative state took a strong stance in favor of sports betting, but both retail and online sportsbooks have been introduced in Iowa to much initial success.

The Iowa Racing and Gaming Commission was assigned the duty of oversight for all physical and online sportsbooks. The agency was previously tasked with providing regulation for the horse racing industry in Iowa and also for its live casinos.

Under state law anyone that is over the age of 21 is allowed to bet with an approved sportsbook. The bettor does not necessarily need to be a resident of Iowa, but they must be located within the state's borders when bets are made.

Three of the state's casinos were among the first to be licensed to provide online sports betting. PointsBet and DraftKings were also awarded licenses. These two are fully virtual and can only be accessed with their own sportsbook apps.

The betting menu for online sportsbooks in Iowa is similar to that of other states which have legalized sports betting. In addition to single game wagers, players are also allowed to make exotic bets on both professional and collegiate sporting events. Basketball, football, soccer, boxing, and MMA events are just a few of the sports offered.
